The Burnett Farm
Mark and Christine Burnett have been happily milking cows together for over 35 years. Today, the fields of lush grass on their farm at Tauranga Bay at Westport are a testament to all their hard work.
Their life on the West Coast has been full of learning. Their farm has been involved in different scientific trials including various grass pasture trials. Their daughter, Melissa, has them out there measuring grass so they know exactly what is happening on each paddock and can make the necessary adjustments. After years of testing, Mark can now pull out a file and tell you exactly what is happening on each paddock, and how fertiliser inputs affect grass growth. That’s dedication to the grass-fed system.
Three River Farm
One of the most picturesque dairy farms, Three River Farms is proudly owned and operated by Pete and Karen O'Rielly with their four daughters. The farm was converted to dairying 18 years ago; before that it was a family owned run off block without any infrastructure.
The 145ha effective grazing platform has a milking herd of approximately 275 predominantly Jersey cows, milked once a day. Peter and Karen farm in a high rainfall area, receiving up to 5 metres per year. Having a grass based system with lower cow numbers suits both the area, environment and their lifestyle. The farm is beautifully bounded on all sides by Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve with the lake extending along the western border buffered by a thick riparian strip of mature native podocarp forest.

Wiffen Dairying
Kate and Andrew have run this farm for 7 years; 5 years as sharemilkers and 2 years as owners. The farm milks 200 cows on flat to undulating land with the Tasman sea on its boundary.
It is a predominantly grass-fed system which is important because grass is grown naturally and harvested fresh from the paddock; and that creates healthy cows and quality naturally produced milk.
